John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (Cheraw, South Carolina, October 21, 1917 – Englewood, New Jersey, January 6, 1993) was a leading American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Life and Work He began playing the trumpet at the age of 13. Gillespie moved to Philadelphia in 1935 to form his first ensemble there with Teddy Hill in 1937. By the early 1940s, he was already playing with jazz greats Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Kenny Clarke. In 1945, he began leading his own small ensembles to play the then-new bebop music. He led his own big band from 1946 to 1950. During that period, Gillespie did pioneering work in jazz with music that consisted of a fusion of jazz, Latin American, and African American music. His most important project of the 1960s was a group featuring James Moody, among others. He also made a bid for the presidency at the time but was not elected.
